MOLGENIS has been listed as NWO Large-Scale Research Infrastructure by the NWO.

Large-scale Research Infrastructures (LSRI) are facilities, resources, and services that enable research communities to carry out research and stimulate cutting-edge work in their field. Where relevant, these infrastructures can also be used for purposes beyond research, such as education or public services.

Large-scale research infrastructures comprise: the relevant human resources; major equipment or collections of instruments; knowledge-related facilities such as collections, archives or scientific data infrastructures; computing systems and communication networks; and any other unique infrastructure that is open to external users and essential for achieving excellence in research and innovation. Research infrastructures may be located at a single site, distributed across multiple sites, or be virtual, either within the Netherlands or internationally.

A large-scale research infrastructure must promote an open access policy for research. This means that the infrastructure provides access to researchers from outside the hosting organisation(s), based on scientific excellence. The term ‘research’ covers the full spectrum of scientific activity, from fundamental to applied research.
